City of Chicago Retirees - Annuitant Group Health Insurane Information is Being Sent Your Way

City of Chicago Annuitants! Be on the lookout for group healthcare insurance information!

 

Information regarding the two, current healthcare options is being mailed to your most current address on file from Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Illinois and Aetna.

 

Please contact these organizations directly for benefit information and costs.

2018 Abridged CAFR

The Board of Trustees has published the 2018 Abridged Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (the "CAFR"). This document is being mailed to all active and retired members of the MEABF.

 

Please read this document carefully as it contains crucial information regarding your pension's current funding status.

City of Chicago Retirees Health Insurance Subsidy Reimbursement Notification

City of Chicago annuitants who are members of the MEABF and meet all of the following criteria:

 

  1. Annuitant must have retired on or after August 23, 1989;
  2. Annuitant must have been hired prior to April 4, 2003;
  3. Annuitant must have at least 15 years of City of Chicago service;
  4. Annuitant must be 65 years old or older; and 

 

Annuitant must have:

 

a. participated in a group healthcare plan for which the Fund offers to deduct health insurance premiums from monthly annuities in accordance with the 1983 and 1985 amendments to the Illinois Pension Code Statutes (currently either the Blue Cross/Blue Shield plans sponsored by the City of Chicago or the Aetna plans sponsored by the Labor Benefits Association);

 

OR

 

b. for the period between January 1, 2017, and December 31, 2019, participated in any health insurance plan and paid their healthcare insurance coverage themselves, either through an account on which the annuitant is named or an account established for the benefit of the annuitant.

 

The MEABF will begin mailing notices regarding the lump-sum refund to which they may be entitled, as well as a notice with instructions on receiving the partial subsidy reimbursement for the months they did not participate in either the Blue Cross/Blue Shield plans sponsored by the City of Chicago or the Aetna plans sponsored by the Labor Benefits Association.

City of Chicago Retirees Health Insurance Subsidy Reimbursement Notification

The Circuit Court of Cook County has ordered that all eligible City of Chicago employee annuitants (both current and future employee annuitants, but not spousal or child annuitants) of the MEABF are entitled to receive a health insurance premium subsidy of $25 per month from the MEABF, representing a partial reimbursement for healthcare costs, for each month after December 31, 2016 in which they qualify.

 

Notices for members who qualify, and have a record of participating in the current Blue Cross Blue Shield or AETNA group healthcare plans are being sent notices regarding the healthcare subsidy reimbursement beginning Wednesday, August 14, 2019.

Notices for members who qualify, but have no record of participating in the current City of Chicago group healthcare plans are being sent beginning Friday, August 2, 2019. 

 

Additional notifications to qualified City of Chicago employee annuitants who participated in the current City of Chicago group healthcare plans will be mailed no later than August 15, 2019.

City of Chicago Retirees Participating in the City Sponsored Healthcare - ALERT

Some Retirees Have Not Cashed Their Healthcare Premium Refund Checks.

 

Retirees or their Legal Representatives may request that the City reissue their refund Checks.

 

Here’s How:


To search by name to determine whether a City retiree has an uncashed healthcare premium refund check for the period of 2003 to 2013, please go to the City’s website by clicking here.

 

If you cannot access the website through the link provided, copy and paste the following web address to your search bar: 

 

https://www.chicago.gov/city/en/depts/dol/supp_info/uncashed-healthcare-premium-refund-checks.html 

 

If a City retiree finds or sees that he/she has an uncashed healthcare premium refund check, he/she should then follow the instructions provided for requesting the check be reissued.

 

**Please note that the Municipal Employees’ Annuity and Benefit Fund of Chicago has no information relating to refund checks and any such inquiry should be directed to the City of Chicago consistent with the instructions on the City’s website.

Pension Matters Correction

The MEABF became aware of a typographic error made in the transcription of the most recent Pension Matters (v47).

 

The Investment Account Summary Total Contributions is $288 million, making the Ending asset value, December 31, 2017 $4,288 million.

 

We regret the error and have corrected the online version of Pension Matters.

These vendors may be representing that personal information was provided by the Fund and that the Fund is aware of and condones their business practices.  Although Illinois Law requires disclosure of information regarding our members which includes names, age, retirement date, annuity amount, final employer, title at retirement, credited service, current title, current reported salary and current employer, the Fund never discloses personal, private information including addresses, phone numbers, email addresses or beneficiary information.
